Google Gemini app launched for iPhone to take on AI-powered Siri

Google has apparently launched a standalone Google Gemini app on iPhone to offer Gemini Live services to users, days after Apple introduced the redesigned Siri.

Google appears to have launched a standalone Google Gemini app for iOS, allowing users to access Gemini Live services. The new app will work independently, contrary to the existing availability of Gemini integrated into the Google app on iPhones. In other words, the Google Gemini app will coexist with the Google app, making it easier for users to fire up Gemini Live directly on their iPhones.

According to a screenshot posted by an iPhone user in the Philippines, spotted by 9to5Google, the App Store now shows a listing for the Google Gemini app, containing screenshots of different services in the app would work. However, this app is unavailable in other regions, including India and the US. Moreover, no other user from the Philippines has reported the availability of the Google Gemini app in Apple 's App Store.

The Google Gemini app listing shows it offers access to Gemini Live, which is currently unavailable in the Google app. The current version of the Google app only offers text-based conversations, so maybe the company wants to segregate the voice chatting service into a standalone app. This could be similar to Google's standalone Google Assistant app on the iPhone. The user who claimed to have downloaded the Google Gemini app also posted screenshots of Gemini Live in action.

While it is unclear when Google will officially announce the Google Gemini app, its availability in the Philippines reveals the company's plan to compete with Apple's redesigned Siri, which now uses Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT integration to offer the AI experience to iPhone users. Apple's personal voice assistant Siri took a new avatar with the iOS 18.1 rollout last month, featuring a new border-to-border glowing design on iPhone devices compatible with Apple Intelligence. While the functionality is limited currently, Apple will expand its services, including ChatGPT integration, with iOS 18.2, expected to come out in December.
