Google May Revive Pixel Laptop With New High-End Pixelbook
An Android-powered laptop could allow Google to offer better synchronisation and connectivity with Android phones, tablets, and other devices.
Google stopped making Pixel laptops after the Pixelbook Go -- a trimmed-down version of the Pixelbook -- came out in 2019. However surprising a move that was, Google's quest to take on Apple in the laptop category failed to take off. While Google focused more on revamping its tablet lineup to counter the iPads in the following years, there was always a MacBook-sized hole in the market, especially with the success of ChromeOS. Google may now have revived its plan to launch a MacBook rival.
As reported by Android Headlines, Google has approved plans to build a high-end, premium laptop with the Pixel branding. While the laptop's name is unclear, it could arrive as the Pixelbook 2 -- the successor to the original Pixelbook. The report added that Google has assigned a team for the dedicated development of the laptop under a project called 'Snowy'. The upcoming Pixel laptop could compete with the likes of Apple's MacBook Pro and Microsoft's Surface laptops. However, that is the extent of the information in the report as it does not reveal what hardware the next Pixel laptop could come with.
However, Google's choice for Pixelbook 2's software could be interesting. The report said while the company could use the popular Chrome OS, it is "not 100 per cent confirmed right now." So, there is a chance the next Pixel laptop could run Android, which falls in line with Google's plan to unify ChromeOS and Android. The company has doubled down on its commitment to standardise Android across its product categories, so an Android-powered laptop is likely. However, it could be a heavily tweaked version of Google's mobile platform.
An Android-powered laptop could allow Google to offer better synchronisation and connectivity with Android phones, tablets, and other devices. However, it would need to pack several additional features to be on par with macOS and Windows -- the world's leading computer operating systems. We will find out more about Google's next laptop in the coming weeks.
