Unlawful termination: The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has lodged a complaint against SpaceX, accusing the aerospace company of unlawfully terminating eight employees who had raised workplace concerns through an open letter. Distributed in June 2022, the letter underlines concerns over CEO Elon Musk's public conduct, which was perceived to negatively impact SpaceX's reputation.
This action follows reports that SpaceX had settled a harassment case involving Musk for $250,000.
The open letter expressed apprehensions about Musk's public behaviour, asserting that his actions frequently became distractions that did not align with the company's mission or values. It also emphasised the importance of ensuring that Musk's public statements did not misrepresent SpaceX's ethos or deter potential talent from joining the organisation.
Engaging in intimidating practices
In addition to the allegations of wrongful termination, the NLRB's complaint contends that SpaceX engaged in intimidating practices, including interrogation, surveillance, and threats against its employees.
Consequently, the regional director of the NLRB in Los Angeles aims to negotiate a settlement with SpaceX. Should SpaceX decline the settlement, a hearing is scheduled before an administrative law judge in March to address the allegations formally.
