'#BanTwitter' trends after Centre sends notice to Twitter over showing Leh part of J&K

Central government has issued a notice to Twitter for showing Leh as part of Jammu and Kashmir inste of Union Territory of Lakh, according to IT ministry sources. ministry, in its notice, has directed microblogging site to explain within five working days why legal action should not be initiated against it and its representatives for disrespecting territorial integrity of India by showing an incorrect map.
notice was issued to Twitter by Ministry of Electronics and IT on November 9, sources said. Soon after news of notice came out, many irked social media users demanded a ban on micro-blogging site for "disrespecting territorial integrity of India" and hashtag 'Ban Twitter' started trending.

Netizens slam Twitter for its 'one-way policies'
"I would highly recommend to #BanTWITTER in India until y explain reasons for repetitively showing Jammu & Kashmir as part of China," a Twitter user quipped.
According to PTI, responding to issue, a Twitter spokesperson said, "We have duly responded to letter and, as part of our correspondence, shared a comprehensive update with latest developments regarding geo-tag issue." spokesperson furr said Twitter remains committed to partnering with government and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to serve public conversation.

Twitter showed Leh as part of China
Twitter h earlier shown Leh as part of China, following which IT secretary h written a stern letter to company's CEO, Jack Dorsey. In response, Twitter h replaced China with Jammu and Kashmir. However, Twitter has not yet corrected map to show Leh as part of Union Territory of Lakh. It is still showing Leh as part of Jammu and Kashmir, which is against official position of Government of India.

Last month, Twitter came under heavy criticism and faced a backlash from social media users after its geotagging feature displayed "Jammu & Kashmir, People's Republic of China" in a live brocast from Leh's Hall of Fame, a war memorial for fallen soldiers in Lakh.

Meanwhile, an industry watcher told PTI that in case Twitter does not fall in line even after latest notice, possible options could include action initiated under Section 69A of IT Act for banning access to Twitter in India. Also, under Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, government can lodge an FIR, which has a punishment of up to 6 months of imprisonment.
Social media users have also been demanding a ban on Twitter after social media giant on Thursday removed display picture of Union Home Minister Amit Shah from its platform, in response to a “report from copyright holder.” It has issued a statement and has restored photo too.
