Twitter moves to label government officials and state affiliated-media accounts

On Thursday, August 6 Twitter informed that the company will be adding new labels for accounts and tweets tied to government officials & state-affiliated media.

On Thursday, August 6 Twitter informed that company will be ding new labels for accounts and tweets tied to government officials and state-affiliated media. In a blog post, Twitter anunced it will longer ‘amplify’ tweets by state-controlled media organisations and exclude m from its recommendations systems. It also said that y will label ‘key government officials’ from China, France, Russia, UK and US. 

While explaining how Twitter will be defining government accounts for new labels, company said that ir “focus is on senior officials and entities that are voice of nation-state abro”.  tech giant ded, “Labels will only be applied to accounts from countries represented in five permanent members of UN Security Council".

In blog post, Twitter said that it was acting to provide people with more context about what y see on social network. microblogging site will be labelling media organisation where state exercises control over editorial content through financial resources and political control over production and distribution.

Twitter believes that people have right to kw when a media account is affiliated directly or indirectly with state actors as state-run media outlet usually use ir news cover as a means to vance a political nda.

Twitter will, however, t be labelling publicly-funded and editorially independent news organisations. y will also t label politicians’ personal accounts as y ‘enjoy widespre name recognition, media attention and public awareness’. For example, US President Donald Trump’s account will t be labelled, but US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s account will be.

Twitter said, "We will longer amplify state-affiliated media accounts or ir Tweets through our recommendation systems including on home timeline, tifications, and search. Government accounts listed in category one are t affected by this change”.
