Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sparked interest of historically-sound globetrotters towards Nalanda, a culturally rich district in Bihar, and the birthplace of one of the 'Greatest Learning Institution' of the ancient era known as Nalanda Mahavira.

Earlier today, PM Modi tweeted, “Visiting the excavated remains of Nalanda was exemplary. It was an opportunity to be at one of the greatest seats of learning in the ancient world. This site offers a profound glimpse into the scholarly past that once thrived here. Nalanda has created an intellectual spirit that continues to thrive in our nation.”

Nalanda Mahavira

Built during the Gupta era, Nalanda Mahavira is considered amongst the first residential universities in the world and is known to have flourished for 700 years during which students were taught subjects ranging from metaphysics to astronomy. Chinese travellers Hiuen-Tsang and I-Tsing have written detailed accounts about the university, which was late deemed as an 'United Nations Heritage Site' in 2016, according to Bihar Tourism.

Hieun Tsang Memorial Hall

Lying close to the old Nalanda varsity, the hall stands as a reminder of Chinese scholar Hiuen Tsang, who not only was educated at the prestigious learning centre, but went on to become a professor at the same establishment.

In January 1957, India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, received the relics of Xuanzang along with his biography and an endowment for the construction of a hall in his memory from His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama of Tibet, as per Bihar Tourism.

Samwasaran

Samavsharan marks a significant religious footprint for followers of Jainism as Tirthankara Lord Mahavira preached his first and last disciple here.

"Samavsharan, which translates to "Refuge to All" is a term for the divine preaching hall of the Tirthankara. The word samavasarana is derived from two words, sama meaning general and avasara meaning opportunity A place where all have a common opportunity of acquiring wisdom," according to Bihar Tourism.

Ashoka Stupa

Located at the pinnacle of the hill, Ashoka Stupa is a major attractions of Rajgir, Nalanda due to its picturesque locale. This is especially dedicated to Lord Gautam Buddha. Travellers can reach here using the walkway, especially for nature Lover. The beauty of the surroundings gets further enhanced during sunset when tourists do not have the words to express the stunning view of the stupa which is on top of the hill," as per Bihar Tourism.
