New Delhi: The popular Sadar Bazar market in Delhi witnessed a stampede-like situation due to the heavy influx of shoppers ahead of Diwali.

A video of the uncontrolled crowd, with people struggling to find their way through while balancing bags on their heads, surfaced on the Internet earlier this week.

Street vendors added to the congestion by obstructing pathways.

In response to the video, police officials stated that they have deployed teams in the market to prevent any untoward incidents and maintain law and order. "Sadar Bazar, during festival seasons, faces high footfall. We are planning to manage the crowd, and meetings will soon be held with the district magistrate, market association, and officials from the MCD for crowd planning," said a senior officer.

According to reports, another police official mentioned that efforts are underway to limit the entry of heavy vehicles to ease congestion. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has not yet commented on the situation.

Rakesh Yadav, president of the Sadar Bazar Association, said they plan to write to the Delhi Police for better crowd management. "We are planning to meet senior police officers of the North District, as the huge crowds can lead to bigger problems if not properly managed," he stated.
