Which came first, the chicken or the egg? You have surely heard this riddle, and it has puzzled us for years, becoming a debatable topic. But can it lead to murder?

In a shocking incident in the Muna Regency of Southeast Sulawesi province, Indonesia, a man was arrested for allegedly stabbing his friend to death following an argument over the classic riddle, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" The tragic event took place on July 24.

The suspect, identified as DR, had invited his friend, Kadir Markus, for a drink. After consuming several rounds of alcoholic beverages, DR posed the riddle to Markus. "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" DR was quoted as asking.

The discussion quickly escalated into a heated debate. Attempting to de-escalate the situation, Markus chose to disengage and head back home. However, DR, armed with a badik—a traditional dagger used by the coastal tribes of southern Sulawesi, including the Bugis and the Makassarese—chased Markus on his bike and then on foot, eventually attacking him multiple times.

Despite the efforts of bystanders who rushed Markus to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Tongkuno police chief Iptu Abdul Hasan confirmed the incident, stating that both men were under the influence of alcohol at the time.

The police have arrested DR and seized the weapon used in the crime, along with a pair of trousers worn by the suspect. DR has been charged with murder and, if convicted, faces up to 18 years in prison.
