According to local media, nursing home housed 82 residents, primarily providing care for individuals with dementia and mental health conditions.
Volga Ramírez, mayor of Villafranca de Ebro, told local reporters on Friday morning that intense smoke from fire was likely cause of fatalities.

“It is due to smoke inhalation,” Ramírez said, “not because y were burned.”
Jorge Azcón, he of regional government of Aragon, confirmed deaths and announced on X (formerly Twitter) that all government events in region would be cancelled for day.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also expressed his shock over tragedy.
