WHO says 70% COVID-19 cases in just 10 countries, terms pandemic ‘wake up call’

During a special meeting the WHO chief said that 70 per cent of the COVID-19 cases are located in just 10 countries and 50 per cent cases are located in just 3.

During a special meeting, chief of World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros ham Ghebreyesus, said that 70 per cent of COVID-19 cases are located in just 10 countries and 50 per cent cases are located in just 3 countries. He said, “t all countries have responded same way, and t all countries have been affected same way”. Taking to Twitter and terming pandemic as a ‘wake up call’, he thanked all nations that have come forward with suggestions on battling pandemic.

COVID-19 pandemic which saw its first outbreak in a wet market in Wuhan, China last year has w spre all across world. virus, named COVID-19 by World Health Organisation, has infected 35,702,309 people worldwide with global death toll reaching at 1,045,955. Talking about pandemic, Tedros highlighted four scenarios that countries are facing during crisis. first scenario involves countries who took quick decisions and avoided large outbreaks, while second scenario involves countries who became a target of massive outbreaks but were able to get everything in control.

He said, “Third, while some countries brought virus under control, as ecomies and societies have eased restrictions, re has been an increase in cases. And fourth, re are still some countries in “intense phase of transmission”. chief ded that  “every situation can be turned around”, under right circumstances involving strong leership, clear and comprehensive strategies and consistent communication.

WHO Emergencies Director, Dr. Michael Ryan said that cases continue to soar in Souast Asia. He ded that re is an “urd trajectory” in rrn hemisphere. He said, “Our current best estimates tell us that about 10 per cent of global population may have been infected by this virus. This varies depending on country; it varies from urban to rural; it varies between different groups. But what it does mean is that vast majority of world remains at risk”. He ded, “We kw pandemic will continue to evolve. But we also kw we have tools that work to suppress transmission and save lives right w, and y are at our disposal.  future depends on choices we collectively make about how we use those tools; develop, scale-up and distribute ors”.
