A rare black rhino calf born in Michigan zoo on Christmas Eve

A good piece of news is coming in from Lansing, Michigan where a rare black rhino calf was born on the auspicious day of Christmas Eve in Potter Park Zoo.

A black rhi calf was born on auspicious day of Christmas Eve in a zoo in Lansing, Michigan. amazing and rare occurrence took place in Potter Park Zoo on morning of December 24 at around 5:45 am. Facebook p of zoo, brocast feed of 12-year-old Doppsee delivering black endangered baby rhi live. According to Potter Park Zoo, baby rhi is looking healthy and has been bonding well with mor Doppsee.

Christmas Eve gift for Potter Park Zoo

Potter Park Zoo said that calf stood up about an hour and a half after birth and it appears to be nursing well. rhi will t be visible to public until wear allows in spring of 2020. black rhi is an endangered species and re are only 5,000 of it left in wilds, which is a significant rise from less than 2,500 black rhis 20 years ago. occasion is special for Potter Park Zoo and for all animal enthusiasts because on aver less than two black rhi calves are born in human care each year, making every calf born a remarkable achievement for caretakers.

staff at Potter Park is also celebrating fact that this is first time in over 100 years that a black rhi calf has been born at zoo. re are just over 50 black rhis in care of Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accredited zoos which are mand by Species Survival Plan (SSP). SSP maintains a genetically healthy population of black rhis in zoos. far, Phineus, came to Potter Park Zoo in 2017 from Texas specifically to breed with Doppsee.

"This is a monumental moment for Potter Park Zoo that has taken our staff years of planning and hard work. We are dedicated to conserving rhis and couldn’t be more excited about this successful black rhi birth," Cynthia Wagner, Director of Potter Park Zoo was quoted as saying on  official website.
