Abhijit Vinayak Banerjee, an Indian-American ecomist has been awarded bel Memorial Prize in Ecomic Sciences in 2019 which was anunced on October 14. ecomist reportedly bagged prize for his work in field of Development Ecomics, with particular emphasis on alleviating global poverty. Currently, Abhijit is Ford Foundation International Professor of Ecomics at Massachusetts Institute of Techlogy. He is third Bengali after Rabindranath Tagore to receive a bel.

Abhijit's initial upbringing in India
Born on 21 February 1961, Banerjee's parents, Nirmala Banerjee and Dipak Banerjee, were Professor of Ecomics at Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, and Professor and He of Department of Ecomics at Presidency College, Calcutta respectively. His schooling and gruation took place in South Point School and Presidency College, Calcutta, where he completed his B.S. degree in ecomics in 1981. Later, he moved to New Delhi and completed his M.A. in ecomics at Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1983.
When bel laureate moved abro
Abhijit moved abro to attain his PhD from Harvard in 1988. As per reports, subject of his doctoral sis was "Essays in Information Ecomics". He is w Ford Foundation International Professor of Ecomics at Massachusetts Institute of Techlogy after he h taught at Harvard University and Princeton University. His significant works include development ecomics for which he received bel. Along with this, he has proposed field experiments as an important methodology to discover causal relationships in ecomics.

- 2009: Houred with Infosys Prize 2009 in social sciences category of ecomics.
- 2012: Shared Gerald Loeb Award Horable Mention for Business Book with co-author Esr Duflo for ir book Poor Ecomics.
- 2013: Named by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon to a panel of experts tasked with updating Millennium Development Goals after 2015.
- 2014: Received Bernhard-Harms-Prize from Kiel Institute for World Ecomy.
- 2019: Delivered Export-Import Bank Of India's 34th Commencement Day Annual Lecture on Redesigning Social Policy.
- 2019: bel Prize in Ecomics, toger with Esr Duflo and Michael Kremer, for ir work alleviating global poverty.

He co-founded Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab along with ecomists Esr Duflo and Sendhil Mullainathan. Abhijit is also a research affiliate of Invations for Poverty Action and a member of Consortium on Financial Systems and Poverty. Banerjee served as president of Bureau for Research in Ecomic Analysis of Development, a research associate of National Bureau of Ecomic Research, a research fellow at Centre for Ecomic Policy Research, an international research fellow of Kiel Institute, fellow at American Acemy of Arts and Sciences, and a fellow at Ecometric Society. He has also been a Guggenheim Fellow and an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow. He is co-author of Poor Ecomics.
