Afghan cultural promoter: 'feeling of abandonment'

A charity founder in Kabul has said Afghan citizens feel a sense of "abandonment," "hopelessness" and "fear" as the Taliban marches on the country's capital.

A charity founder in Kabul has said Afghan citizens feel a sense of "abandonment," "hopelessness" and "fear" as Taliban marches on country's capital.

Omaid Sharifi is founder of social change charity "Arts Lords" and has been promoting art and culture within Afghanistan for many years, he has given a picture of what life is currently like in Kabul.

"ir food prices are going high, banks are closed down re. You cannot get your money from bank and you are just a sitting duck," Sharifi told U.K. brocaster Sky, ding "it just gives you feeling of abandonment."

He also spoke of displaced people who are trying to flee from a regime potentially run by Taliban.

"Almost every single park in city is filled with all se people who are displaced. And re is a sense of hopelessness, a sense of fear among population that y don't have any option but just to stay and wait for ir destiny," said charity founder.

Sharifi has experienced life under Taliban previously and he spoke of possible future facing country, "any expression of art would be banned. re would be no music, no TV, re would be no murals, no paintings," ding "we are going back hundreds and hundreds of years to a place that re's no empathy, re's no kindness."

When questioned on international response to situation, Sharifi said " world just turned ir backs," ding that blame lies with current and previous Afghan governments, but also with military forces who didn't fight insurgents but "apparently y all put down ir guns and it was shocking for citizens."

In a stunning rout, Taliban seized nearly all of Afghanistan in just over a week, despite billions of dollars spent by U.S. and NATO over nearly two deces to build up Afghan security forces.

Just days earlier, an American military assessment estimated it would be a month before capital would come under insurgent pressure.

Inste, Taliban swiftly defeated, co-opted or sent Afghan security forces fleeing from wide swaths of country, even though y h some air support from U.S. military.
