Amidst the intra-Afghan Peace talks being held in Qatar, fierce fighting has broken out between security forces and Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

Amidst intra-Afghan Peace talks being held in Qatar, fierce fighting has broken out between security forces and Taliban fighters in Afghanistan. long-awaited Afghan Peace talks began last week and are being seen as a ‘historic opportunity’ to end deces of war in country. As per reports, in latest episode of violent overnight clashes erupted in three districts of Nangarhar province after security checkpoint was attacked by Taliban fighters.

Clashes amid peace talks

As per Sayhoon News reports, Afghan Defense Minister Asullah Khalid has stated that attacks by Taliban forces have actually increased since beginning of peace talks. Khalid also is reported to have ded that in an effort to ensure violence does t negatively impact ongoing talks, Afghan security forces have refrained from any aggressive retaliatory measures.

In a similar incidence last week, clashes between Taliban and Afghan security forces left six insurgents de while three ors were injured.  incident occurred in sourn province of Kandahar on September 13, just day after Intra-Afghan peace talks commenced in Doha.

ongoing Afghan peace talks between government and Taliban were me possible by a deal signed between rebel group and United States back in February. deal stipulated that US will reduce its troops in Afghanistan while government and Taliban exchanged a pre-determined number of prisoners. long-anticipated peace talks finally began after Afghan government released final batch of Taliban prisoners in August.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo attended first day of Afghan peace talks in Doha and affirmed US commitment to peace processes in region. While talks are currently being held in Qatar, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan have offered to host any future talks between Taliban and Afghanistan.
