'India joins UNSC at a critical juncture': Envoy Tirumurti reasons 'overwhelming support'

India's Permanent Representative to UN, Ambassor TS Tirumurti, on Wednesday said that India's election as a n-permanent member of United Nations Security Council (UNSC) was a result of PM Modi's global leership and a strong led by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. India was only country from Asia-Pacific Group and won election upposed.

In a mess, Ambassor Tirumurti said, "I am truly delighted that India has been elected as n-permanent member of United Nations for 2021-2022. We have received overwhelming support and I am deeply humbled by tremendous confidence which member states of United Nations have reposed in India. Our election to security council is a testament to Prime Minister Modi's vision and his inspiring global leership, particularly in time of COIVD-19."

Along with India, Ireland, Mexico and rway also won Security Council elections. re were 192 Member States present for voting and 2/3 required majority was 128. Cana lost elections.

India will sit in most powerful UN organ, for two years beginning on January 1, along with five permanent members China, France, Russia, UK, and US as well as n-permanent members Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent, and Grenines, Tunisia, and Vietnam.
Previously, India has been elected as a n-permanent member of Council for years 1950-1951, 1967-1968, 1972-1973, 1977-1978, 1984-1985, 1991-1992, and most recently in 2011-2012.

India has been actively pursuing a permanent membership in UN Security Council for years and has received support from four of five permanent members. Barring China, or permanent members of Security Council have backed India to join as a permanent member, including two successive US governments.

On June 5, Ministry of External Affairs released brochure which outlined India's priorities to secure a seat. "Ten years since we were last elected to Security Council, we are facing four very different challenges to international peace and security – rmal process of international governance has been at an increasing strain as frictions have increased, tritional and n-tritional security challenges continue to grow unchecked - terrorism is most egregious of such examples. Global institutions remain unreformed and under representative, y are refore less able to deliver, COVID-19 pandemic and its grave ecomic repercussions will test world like never before," he said.
