In a recent development in Syria-Turkey war, German Chancellor Angela Merkel on October 13 urged Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to end Turkey's offensive in northern Syria immediately. Merkel further warned that it could further destabilize the region which has been scarred by violence in recent years. Another outcome of Turkey's actions could be the resurgence of the IS jihadist group, she added. She also said that a large part of the Syrian population will be driven away from their homes if Turkey's offensive continues.

In a phone call with Erdogan, Merkel "spoke in favor for an immediate end to the military operation", the chancellor's office said in a statement.

France, Germany suspends arms supply to Turkey

At the same time, France has suspended all planned exports of "war materials" to Turkey that could be used in their offensive into Syria, said a statement from the foreign and defense ministries Saturday. The statement added that a meeting in the European Union's foreign affairs committee will decide on a coordinated European approach to the issue. Also, Germany stopped weapon trade with Turkey. Both nations are now staunch opposers of the Syria-Turkey war.

The Foreign Minister of France said, "It is dangerous for the security of the Kurds. Dangerous because it benefits Islamic State, which we have been fighting for five years. It must stop." Heiko Maas, Germany's Foreign Minister told an international news organization, that "against the background of the Turkish military offensive in northeastern Syria, the government will not issue any new permissions for any weapons that can be used by Turkey in Syria."

US, Iran and India also oppose Turkey

Iran, India and the US have also opposed the war previously. Indian foreign ministry called upon Turkey to exercise restraint and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria. Iranian state TV reported on Tuesday that Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif called his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, to express Tehran's opposition to the anticipated Turkish operation. Above all, American President Donald Trump threatened to destroy and obliterate Turkey's economy if the nation decides to take any "off-limits" actions, following Trump's decision to withdraw the American forces from northeastern Syria on October 7.
