Antarctic ice sheet melting 1,20,000 years ago increased sea-level by 3 metres, says study

Study shows that melting Antarctic ice sheet during the Last Interglacial (LIG), a period 1,29,000 years ago has led to an increase in sea-level by 3 metres.

Global warming has become one of most important issues for countries across globe as most of m are w facing a serious threat from effect of climate change. A recent study shows that melting of ice sheets in Antarctica during Last Interglacial (LIG), a period 1,29,000 years ago have led to an increase in sea-level by 3 metres. environmental changes were recorded from Patriot Hills Blue Ice Area at periphery of West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS).

latest study conducted by a team heed by Chris Turney at University of South Wales suggests that melting of West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) was likely caused by less than 2 degrees Celcius ocean warming and with growing effect of climate change, increase in sea-level might happen again. melting of ice sheets and likely increase in sea-level demonstrates importance of Paris climate agreement.

Paris climate agreement

Paris Agreement that came into effect in vember 2016, is an agreement within United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) that requires signatories to keep increase in global temperature to well below 2-degree Celsius above pre-industrial levels. As per reports, currently, 188 countries part of UNFCCC have become a party to it, except Iran and Turkey.

initiative suffered a major setback in 2017 when United States President Donald Trump anunced his intention to withdraw from agreement, which was signed by Obama ministration in April 2016. On vember 4, 2019, Trump ministration gave a formal tice of intention to withdraw, which takes 12 months to come into effect. So, earliest possible effective withdrawal date by United States will be after vember 4, 2020.
