Amid massive anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh, Hindu minorities have fled to the northern part of the country, seeking refuge near the Indian border. Videos from the region show these communities taking shelter in the border area, with no apparent help in sight.
The violence against Hindus in Bangladesh has escalated, with homes and temples being targeted by Islamist mobs. However, despite all these developments, US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has issued a statement condemning Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and praising the ‘brave’ protestors.
What did Chuck Schumer say?
"PM Hasina’s violent reaction to legitimate protests made her continued rule untenable," Schumer stated. "I applaud the brave protestors & demand justice for those killed. It’s critical to establish a balanced interim government that respects the rights of all & sets up democratic elections swiftly."
This is not the first time that Hindus in the region have faced persecution. Bangladesh, formerly known as East Pakistan, witnessed a genocide targeting Hindus in 1971. It is one of the few regions in the world, along with Nazi Germany and Rwanda, to witness such atrocities in 20th century. The suffering of the Jews is well known but the suffering of Tutsis and Hindus of Bangladesh is relatively unknown.
Even during 1971, the US backed the side that was carrying out the genocide, instead of the side that stepped in to stop the carnage.
The plight of the Hindu minorities seeking safety near the Indian border remains dire.
