Australia reveals more shutdowns to fight coronavirus

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Monday announced the closure of the country's bars, clubs, cinemas and casinos to fight the new coronavirus pandemic.

"No more going to the pub after work, no more going to the gym in the morning, no more sitting down for brunch at a cafe. These changes are vital to slow the spread of this virus to save lives," Morrison told Parliament on Monday.

Morrison said the drastic measures nationwide would start on Monday and also include sporting and religious venues.

Restaurants and cafes will be restricted to takeout service only, but schools remain open.

However, the New South Wales state Premier told reporters in Sydney on Monday that though the health advice on school hasn't changed, she encouraged parents to keep their schoolchildren at home.

Morrison said the rules were implemented because people disregarded social distancing requirements.

He said the restrictions would be in place for at least six months, but added that the time frame could be reconsidered if the health situation changes.

Australia has confirmed more than 1,000 coronavirus cases, including seven deaths.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever or coughing.

For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.

The coronavirus pandemic has infected more than 335,900 people and killed more than 14,600.

More than 98,300 people have recovered so far, mostly in China.
