At least 12 people have been killed and 40 others wounded as a result of a missile attack on the Azerbaijani city of Ganja in the early hours of Saturday, according to Turkish broadcaster A News. The Azerbaijan Defence Ministry said the cities of Ganja and Mingachevir were struck, claiming that the missiles were shot from two separate locations in Armenia.
Armenian authorities have not responded to the claim. Ganja is the second largest city in Azerbaijan and according to official reports at least 20 residential buildings were destroyed during Saturday's attack.
The recent fighting between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces began on September 27 and has left hundreds of people dead in the biggest escalation of the decades-old conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh since a separatist war ended in 1994. The region lies in Azerbaijan but has been under control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia.
