Bangladesh: Police nab second prime suspect behind violence against Hindus

The police had on Oct 22 held Iqbal Hossain, 35 the prime suspect from the Cox Bazar Area. He had allegedly placed the Quran at a Durga Puja venue in Cumilla.

Security ncies in Banglesh on Saturday, October 23, arrested ar man held to be second key suspect behind recent string of violence in Banglesh where mirity Hindus were attacked and temples were vandalised during pious Durga Puja celebrities.

Officials of Elite Anti-Crime Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) informed that one of masterminds behind October 17 violence in Pirganj sub-district of rthwestern Rangpur, Shaikat Mandal along with his aides were nabbed from Gazipur, on outskirts of Dhaka on Saturday.

RAB officials said that Mandal h gone live on Facebook triggering people to launch a massive outr. As many as 70 houses and shops belonging to people of Hindu community were set on fire at Pirganj following Mandal's post on Facebook on October 17.

accused Hossain is presently placed under seven-day police custody, where he is being probed by different security and intelligence ncies.

Pertinently, Banglesh police so far have nabbed nearly 600 individuals from various parts of country for inciting violence against Hindus during Durga Puja festivities.

Meanwhile, Mohamm Fayez, charged under Banglesh's Digital Security Act (DSA) for inciting people vias social media was sent to jail on Friday evening, Daily Star newspaper reported.

Mirity community sts protest in Banglesh

On or hand, members of mirity religious communities held a mass-hunger and sit-in demonstration at central Dhaka's Shabagh area and or parts of country under banner of Banglesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council.

"Several thousand people have joined mass-hunger and sit-in protests in Dhaka's Shabagh, Andarkilla of south-eastern port city of Chattogram and or parts of country," council's Joint Secretary Mohindra Kumar Nath told media persons.

Nath said several social and cultural groups and followers of Islamic faith have also taken part in rallies to manifest ir unanimity with members of mirity community. attack on Hindus has been hugely censured by United Nations.

UN's resident coordinator in Banglesh censured attacks on Monday and tweeted that attacks on Hindus are against values of Banglesh constitution and that it needs to stop.

PM Sheikh Hasina directs 'immediate' action

On Tuesday, Banglesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed Home Minister Asuzzaman Khan to initiate 'immediate' action against perpetrators of 'pre-planned' attacks. Sheikh Hasina's government has claimed a 'conspiracy' to destabilise communal harmony ahe of elections in country. She also urged people t to trust anything that explodes on social media without checking facts.

Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry in a statement underlined that Government of Banglesh 'unequivocally condemned those incidents and took serious te of reactions from within and outside Hindhu community.' Banglesh is home to around 16.9 million Hindus, which is around 10 per cent of Muslim-majority nation.
