Beirut fire: Red Cross humanitarian operation at risk with food aid stored near port

Following a massive fire at Beirut post on Thursday, International Committee of Red Cross said ir humanitarian efforts were at risk of being disrupted. In little over a month since Beirut blast, Lebanese capital witnessed a second catastrophe on September 10 as a massive fire broke out in its port area. A large column of black smoke mushroomed over again Beruit sky a month after dely explosion that killed nearly 200 people.

Stocks of humanitarian aid at-risk
Fabrizio Carboni, ICRC Regional Director for Near and Middle East, said in a tweet that Red Cross uses port to store ‘stocks thousands food parcels and 0.5 million litres of oil’ and even though total extent and dam of fire is t yet kwn it could seriously hamper group’s humanitarian efforts in area.

As per Lebanese Army, fire originated at port’s duty-free wing which contained tires, oil and or flammable materials. Authorities have closed down major ros leing to port and have since begun re-routing traffic.
Beirut residents' panic was compounded by fear that re may be or harmful chemicals near vicinity of fire that could cause yet ar devasting explosion. Earlier during salv operations, French and Italian chemical experts stated locating 120 containers with harmful chemicals; Lebanese army later stated that containers h been moved away from port and stored safely.

Meanwhile, Lebanese President Michel Aoun is reported to have said that fire could have been result of technical error, negligence or even "sabot". Lebanese leer also ded that origin and cause of fire must be discovered as soon as possible and those responsible, be it accident or sabot, must be held accountable.
