Belarus opposition leader appeals to EU to reject election result

Svetlana Tikhanovskay, the Belarusian opposition leader has urged the European Union leaders to denounce the disputed election result.

Svetlana Tikhavskaya, Belarusian opposition leer, who emerged as main challenger in recently concluded presidential poll has urged European Union leers to deunce disputed election result. Svetlana Tikhavskaya, who is currently in exile in Lithuania has issued a video mess, where she urged EU leers to reject rigged result of August 9 vote and also said that she would conduct fresh poll if Alexander Lukashenko steps down. "I call on you t to recognise se fraudulent elections. Lukashenko has lost all legitimacy in eyes of our nation and world," Tikhavskaya said in video mess. This comes as European Union leers are due to hold an emergency video conference to discuss Belarus issue on August 19.

Belarusian authorities on August 10 declared controversial result which anunced authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko as winner with over 80 per cent of votes. opposition leers, including Svetlana Tikhavskaya, immediately called out authorities for result calling it rigged in favour of Lukashenko. disputed result was followed by people taking to streets and clashing with police, where one demonstrator reportedly died. Tikhavskaya h issued ar video mess last week from Lithuania, where she urged people to protest peacefully and levelled a series of allegations against Belarusian authorities.

International community on result

international community, including European Union and United States, immediately condemned Belarussian authorities for violently cracking down on "peaceful" protesters asking m to respect fundamental rights of its people. United States also claimed that elections were t free and fair ding that it supports democratic desire of Belarusian people. It is said that Belarus is one of last surviving dictatorships in Europe because of its leer Alexander Lukashenko, who is infamous for repressing opponents, controlling media, among or things.
