Washington: In the first presidential debate for the upcoming US Elections 2024, current president Joe Biden and his predecessor Donald Trump exchanged a war of words about the Russia-Ukraine War.

When asked about what will the two candidates for foreign policies and how will they end the war in Ukraine, Trump kicked off the series of clash by claiming that Russian President Vladimir Putin would have never invaded Ukraine if the US had a president who he respected.

"If we had a real president, a president that knew that was respected by Putin, he would have never he would have never invaded Ukraine."

Notably, Trump had a long history of 'positive' comments about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s toughness, including calling Putin’s tactics in the 2022 invasion of Ukraine "genius" and "very savvy."

Further in the debate, Biden hit back at Trump saying, "This guy (Trump) has told Putin, do whatever you want...Putin said he would take Kyiv in five days because it was part of the old Soviet Union....he could not get it done, they have lost thousands and thousands of troops"

The current president further termed Russian President Vladimir Putin a "war criminal," with Biden warning that if Russia is successful in capturing Ukraine then it might lead to conflicts in Europe.

"Putin is a war criminal. He has killed thousands of people, and he has made one thing clear, that he wants to establish the Soviet Empire, all of Ukraine. Do you think, he would stop there...if he takes Ukraine, what you think happens to Poland, Belarus, NATO countries," the US President said.

Meanwhile, when asked if Putin's terms to end the war in Ukraine were acceptable, Trump said no.

"No, they're not acceptable."

Putin has said that Russia would only end its war in Ukraine if Kyiv surrenders the entirety of four regions claimed by Moscow and abandons its bid to join NATO.

Putting his bid forward, Trump claimed that he would end the war in Ukraine if reelected.
