7.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Southern Coast of Peru

No damage, injuries or casualties have been reported so far. However, a tsunami warning was initiated by the authorities.

Lima: On Friday, June 28, an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 shook the southern coast of Peru, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said.

Earlier, the authorities issued a tsunami warning was initiated by the authorities.

This comes a day after the country was hit by a 5.1 magnitude quake.

According to the Chief of Disaster Risk Management and National Defense at the Ministry of Health, David Aponte informed local radio station RPP of only three minor injuries were reported in the quake.

Following the earthquake,  Arequipa was hit by four aftershocks of 4 to 4.6 magnitude, causing some landslides on local roads and panic among residents.

The Peruvian government said on social media that it is monitoring the situation to assess the damage and determine the actions required to be taken.

Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen, has now discarded the tsunami warning on the coast of Arequipa.
