Canadian PM Trudeau dissolves Parliament, launches election campaign

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his decision to dissolved the Canadian Parliament and launched the election campaign on September 11.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dissolved the Parliament on September 11 and launched the election campaign. While speaking at Rideau Hall, the Prime Minister said that Team Trudeau is ready to build and move forward with the progress that is already made in the last four years. Polls have revealed that the Liberals and the Conservative party are in for a close call with no clear majority in the upcoming elections scheduled on October 31. The Canadian Prime Minister launched their campaign for the next 40 days with the slogan “Choose Forward”. Prime Minister also believes that politics is really about helping people and that is exactly what his campaign is all about.

Dissolution of Parliament

Prime Minister Trudeau, in a meeting with Governor General Julie Payette, Queen Elizabeth II's representative in Canada, requested to dissolve the Parliament and announced the formal initiation of the campaigning for the general election. Payette also agreed with PM's request and later tweeted about the dissolution herself. After the signing of all the required documents, the Prime Minister departed from the Rideau Hall and the dissolution was later informed to The Queen. The power to dissolve a Parliament is a royal Prerogative exercised by the Governor General.

Prior to the announcement, Prime Minister Trudeau posted on social media that he is going to make an announcement at Rideau Hall along with the link for maximum people to join him live. The 29th Governor General of Canada, Payette has agreed to move forward with the decision of dissolution of the Parliament and also posted a simple chart, describing the proceedings at the Hall today.

What does dissolution of Parliament mean?

The dissolution means the termination of the Parliament along with ending all business in the Senate and the House of Commons. Dissolution is immediately followed by the general elections and is only possible when the Governor General issues a proclamation. All chamber activity, incomplete business even including the government bills and Private Member's Business. All the Committees cease to exist until the reconstitution of the House and activities of the Parliamentary associations are postponed. The constitution limits the duration of the Parliament to five years except in an event of war, invasion, and insurrection. Instead, this year, after requesting the Governor General, PM Trudeau announced the dissolution in just four years as opposed to the Liberal government being expired in the usual term of 5 years.

Canadian Elections 2019

This will be the 43rd Canadian general election scheduled to take place on October 21. The candidates standing in opposition to the current Prime Minister from The Liberal party is Jagmeet Singh, the leader of The New Democratic Party and Andrew Sheer, the leader of the Conservative Party. According to the polls, no party has a clear majority. 338 seats are required in order to win a clear majority. However, the failure of which might give birth to a fragmented  Parliament than the current one Liberals won with 177 seats, as compared to 95 seats by the Conservatives. The majority required to win is at least 170 seats.
