Candles lit at HK university for removed sculpture

A small gathering to mark Hong Kong's recent removal of artwork dedicated to the 1989 Chinese pro-democracy movement, took place late Friday.

Universities in Hong Kong are removing memorials to the bloody suppression of the 1989 Chinese pro-democracy movement centered on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

The gathering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong comes after it followed Hong Kong University in chucking away a piece of art that memorialises the popular movement in China in 1989.

Another institute of learning, Lingnan University, also removed its artwork at the same time

Altogether three universities in Hong Kong have removed their art this week, all of it related to the 1989 pro-democracy movement.

Recently, Hong Kong authorities opened a new a giant new gallery devoted to modern art, called "M+".

So far, none of the Hong Kong universities which have thrown away their art have said whether they would donate it to the new gallery.
