Bangladesh: Carcass of freshwater Ganges dolphin found in Halda river sanctuary
Officials in Bangladesh have reportedly said on May 10 that locals have found carcass of a freshwater Ganges dolphin in Halda river sanctuary, as per reports.

Officials in Banglesh have reportedly said on May 10 that carcass of a freshwater dolphin have been found in a river sanctuary. y ded that rare sight caused fears as fishermen are taking vantage of coronavirus lockdown to poach endangered species. Fishery department official Abdullah al Mamun reportedly told media that locals in souastern town of Raojan discovered 62-inch (157-centimetre) long Ganges river dolphin on banks of Halda River.

He ded that creature h suffered a sharp and deep injury from its neck to tail and layers of its body fat were missing. Manzoorul Kibria, coordinator of Halda River Research Laboratory (HRRL) reportedly said that this dolphin is second to be found de in same sanctuary since Banglesh has imposed lockdown to curb spre of coronavirus. According to reports, Banglesh restricts killing of Ganges dolphins which are categorised as endangered under International Union for Conservation of Nature's "Red List" of threatened species.
A local official on condition of anonymity reportedly said that locals have started trawling river as police who usually guard region were busy enforcing lockdown in Raojan. Local forestry department he Yasin Nawaz ded that y are trying to make a living by catching fish illegally.

Meanwhile, WWF claims that Ganges river dolphin was officially discovered in 1801. Ganges river dolphins once lived in Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems of Nepal, India, and Banglesh. But species is extinct from most of its early distribution ranges.

Calves are chocolate brown at birth and n have grey-brown smooth, hairless skin as ults. Females are larger than males and give birth once every two to three years to only one calf."
