New Delhi: CCTV visuals of Bangladesh temple theft has emerged which shows a thief stealing the crown of Goddess Kali from Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple in Satkhira District. The stolen crown was gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021 when he was on a visit to Bangladesh . Notably, the Temple is reverred as a significant Hindu Shakti Peeth.

As per reports, the theft in the Jeshoreshwari temple in Shyamnagar area took place on Thursday between 2.pm and 2.30 pm. The matter came to light after the temple cleaning staff notices the crown was missing from the deity's head. The theft occurred after temple priest Dilip Mukherjee left following the worship rituals that day. The theft incident created a panic in the area as this comes amid Durga Puja. 

Soon after, police launched a probe into the theft incident and scanned the CCTVs installed at temple premises. "We are reviewing the temple's CCTV footage to identify the thief," said Inspector Taizul Islam of Shyamnagar Police Station. 

Jeshoreshwari Temple One of 51 Shakti Peeths

The stolen crown was made of silver and gold plating and holds significant cultural and religious importance. According to Hindu mythology, the Jeshoreshwari Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths scattered across India and neighboring countries. The name "Jeshoreshwari" means "Goddess of Jeshore." Prime Minister Modi had gifted the crown during his visit to the neighboring country on March 27, 2021. On that day, he placed the crown on the head of the deity as a symbolic gesture. PM Modi had also shared a video of his visit to the temple, which was his first visit to any country after the COVID-19 pandemic.

High Commission of India in Bangladesh Urges Action

Meanwhile, the High Commission of India in Bangladesh has expressed deep concern and urged the Mohamed Yunus-led government to investigate the theft, recover the crown & take action against the miscreants.

Taking to X, the Indian High Commission wrote, “We have seen reports of theft of the crown gifted by PM Modi to Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple (Satkhira) in 2021 during his visit to 🇧🇩. We express deep concern & urge Govt of Bangladesh to investigate theft, recover the crown & take action against the perpetrators.”

All About Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple

Jeshoreshwari Kali Temple is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to the Goddess Kali, the temple is located in Ishwaripur--a village in Shyam Nagar, Upazila of Satkhira.
It is believed that the temple was built by a Brahman named Anari in the latter part of the 12th century. He created a 100-door temple for the Jashoreshwari Peeth (shrine) and later it was renovated by Lakshman Sen in the 13th century finally, Raja Pratapaditya rebuilt the temple in the 16th century.

According to Hindu mythology, of the 51 Peeths, the temple at Ishwaripur is the place where the palms and soles of the feet of Goddess Sati fell and the goddess resides there in the form of Devi Jashoreshwari and Lord Shiva appears as Chanda.
