A study released on August 20 and posted in Journal of Pediatric shows that children play a larger role in community spre of vel coronavirus than previously thought. As a part of study, 49 out of 192 children tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 and 18 ors showed illness related to vel coronavirus. children were d between 0-22.

Children's role in COVID transmission

According to study, infected children h more virus in ir airways than ults who were hospitalised in ICUs for Covid-19 treatment. objective of study res, “As schools plan for re-opening, debates around role children play in COVID-19 pandemic persist. Concerns have been raised as to wher allowing children to congregate in classroom will fuel spre of pandemic. On an individual level, families are worried how SARS-CoV-2 infection could affect ir children and family. Particular concern is elevated for families belonging to low socio-ecomic classes, where prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection is higher, and where multi-generational cohabitation is rm, increasing risk of transmitting infection to vulnerable grandparents and older ults”.

study suggests that transmissibility increases with a high viral lo. Also, children who show symptoms of vel coronavirus might t necessarily have it as at times, y often overlap with common childhood illnesses like influenza. Lael Yonker, author of study from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in US said that, "I was surprised by high levels of virus we found in children of all s, especially in first two days of infection. I was t expecting viral lo to be so high. You think of a hospital, and of all of precautions taken to treat severely ill ults, but viral los of se hospitalised patients are significantly lower than a 'healthy child' who is walking around with a high SARS-CoV-2 viral lo”.

Apart from this, test also examined expression of viral receptor and antibody response in healthy children. According to study, while children with vel coronavirus might t become seriously ill like ults, y can spre infection and bring virus into ir homes as asymptomatic carriers or carriers with few symptoms attending school. Study author Alessio Fasa from MGH said that, "During this Covid-19 pandemic, we have mainly screened symptomatic subjects, so we have reached erroneous conclusion that vast majority of people infected are ults”. He ded, "However, our results show that kids are t protected against this virus. We should t discount children as potential spreers for this virus”.
