China’s ceremonial legislature is attacking legislation in U.S. Congress to support pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.
A spokesman for National People’s Congress says legislation “violates basic rms of international law and international relations” and “grossly interferes in China’s domestic politics.” spokesman, Zang Tiewei, is latest Chinese official to criticize legislation passed this week by U.S. House of Representatives. One of bills would require annual reviews by U.S. secretary of state of Hong Kong’s special ecomic and tre status, providing a check on Beijing’s influence over territory. China’s foreign ministry has threatened to take unspecified countermeasures if measures are passed in Senate. Zang said Friday that a potential Chinese legislative response depended on bills’ progress.
