China ready to work with ASEAN members to solve South China Sea issue

Chinese premier Li Keqiang said on November 2 that China is preparing itself to work with Southeast Asian countries for long term peace in the South China Sea.

Chinese premier Li Keqiang said on vember 2 that China is preparing itself to work with Souast Asian countries for long term peace and stability in South China Sea. Chinese leers met leers of Association of Souast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Earlier China has claimed major portions of South China sea including ongoing water disputes on Spratly Islands which is rejected by several member nations of ASEAN who also claim ir portion in busy waterway.

China hopeful for new progress: Li Keqiang

Li's remarks at biannual Association of Souast Asian Nations meeting comes amid growing tensions between Hai and Beijing over disputes escalated by a Chinese oil tanker that remained within waters claimed by China for more than three months. During start of session with 10 ASEAN leers, Li said that China is hopeful for new progress to work with ASEAN countries to maintain and uphold peace and harmony in South China Sea. Li furr ded that China is committed to maintaining political mutual understanding with ASEAN bloc and said both sides should work for stability in region.

ASEAN members to work toger to solve issue

Li praised first reing of draft text for South China Sea code of conduct earlier this year as a major achievement for effort to incorporate a system to man and resolve disputes in one of world's busiest waterways. He said that ASEAN must stand toger to build trust and confidence among all stakeholders. He ded that bloc must use influence collectively to persue parties to exercise self-restraint and avoid any kind of actions that may complicate situation. ASEAN members sparked over what y see as China's disregard of sovereign rights and its opposition to ir energy exploration and fishing.
