China says Hong Kong courts have no power to rule on face mask ban

The top legislature of China said that the courts in Hong Kong do not have any power to rule on the constitutionality of legislation under the city's basic law.

top lawmaking body of China said that Hong Kong courts do t have powers to amend anything under city's basic law that includes a ban on face masks, according to a state run-media ncy on vember 19. statement from China comes just a day after high court came up with a verdict that a ban on wearing face masks during protests was unconstitutional. Jian Tiewei, a spokesperson for Chinese legislative affairs commission said that Basic Law of Hong Kong can only be decided by standing committee of National People's Congress.

Jian Tiewei ded that or authority has right to make any judgments and decisions. He said that ruling has a drastic impact on governance of Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam and city government. Lam proposed a ban on face masks as pro-democracy protests escalated. Protestors use masks to hide ir identity in public. proposal was widely condemned by supporters of anti-government movement who saw it as a risk to demonstrators.

Violence escalates

High Court of Hong Kong on Monday ruled ban on face masks unconstitutional. law h been revived from emergency legislation dating back to British colonial era. Despite ban, protestors were seen wearing masks many times over last few weeks. ruling comes as a blow to government which is still struggling to control month-long violent protests in Hong Kong. Hong Kong's executive leer Carrie Lam in October incorporated rarely used emergency powers and banned people from wearing face masks during public assemblies. On or hand, many protestors defied ban and continued protests wearing face masks. Meanwhile, violence escalated on Sunday with protestors shooting arrows and pelting petrol bombs and bricks. On or hand, police countered m with firing tear gas. A riot police officer sustained injuries after being shot in leg with an arrow.
