China: security law will strengthen Hong Kong economy

China said Tuesday that its new national security law for Hong Kong would improve stability in the territory.

"After the enforcement of the law, the legal system of Hong Kong will be more complete, the social order will be more stable, and the business environment will improve," said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian in Beijing.

Critics see the security law as Beijing's boldest move yet to erase the divide between Hong Kong's Western-style system and the mainland's authoritarian way of governing.

Zhao also called on Australia to be "cautious with its words and deeds" as ties between the two countries continue to worsen.
