Climate change memes rule social media boosting awareness among youth

Apart from the school strikes for climate, initiated by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, around the world, people have started creating memes to raise awareness

Apart from the protests against climate change and school strikes, initiated by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, around the world, people have started creating memes to raise awareness among youngsters. Several social media accounts have mushroomed that share memes on the issue of climate change. There have been questions whether it is a valid form of protest but the message of ‘climate change is real’ has been able to make its way.

Concern around climate change

Instagram accounts like sustainabili.teens, climemechange, and climatememes420 share memes on a daily basis that reached to thousands of followers in the form of posts and Instagram stories. The climemechange, with more than 46,000 followers, share hilarious memes which directly or indirectly propagating the concern around climate change. When Greta Thunberg gave US President Donald Trump what netizens called ‘death stare’ at the United Nations headquarters, social media exploded with memes. Climemechange instantly shared a meme with caption “Caring deeply for the well being of humanity doesn't mean you have to actually *like people*”.

Teenagers like Thunberg and Ridhima Pandey leading from the front

During the 74th session of the United National General Assembly (UNGA), Thunberg, the 16-year-old climate activist, drew the attention of people across all age groups when she gave an aggressive speech on climate change. She also filed a complaint, along with 15 children, to protest lack of government action on the climate crisis. Ridhima Pandey, a native of Haridwar, India, was also among the complainants. Pandey had also filed a petition in 2017 to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) against the government for failing to take action on climate change.

The campaign continues

Thunberg has not stopped after the powerful speech at the UN and led a march in Montreal, Canada on September 28 that was part of a wave of global "climate strikes. She also met Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to register her concern. However, later, Thunberg told a news conference that Trudeau is "not doing enough" to curb greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. The growing involvement of youth and teenagers have been equally met by memes in increasing its reach.
