As deadly coronavirus pandemic has taken humanity host, total number of COVID-19 positive cases have crossed one million mark worldwide, while total number of deaths surged past 50,000 on Thursday, April 2.

Italy worst affected country in Europe

From China, baton was passed to Italy which had become new epicentre of virus as country has a high percent of elderly population which is more susceptible to deadly virus, considering immunity and resistance of body to fight infections goes down with advancement in .

Despite having one of best health care systems in world, Italy is struggling to contain spread of lethal COVID-19 infection while witnessing number of deaths surge by hour. While elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions are hardest hit by virus, World Health Organization warned that young people were also vulnerable.

United States has w become worst-hit country in world surpassing Italy in terms of number of COVID-19 positive cases. US has w over 237,000 positive cases, a figure double than Italy which has somewhat over 115,000 cases.

US registers over 200,000 cases

However, Italy has suffered maximum deaths as a major chunk of its population falls withing d and vulnerable category. death toll in Italy is nearing 14,000 mark while US has witnessed over 5,700 deaths. Of total tally of US deaths, over 1,300 have died in New York alone;  city that is  financial capital of US is w a hotspot and latest epicentre of deadly virus.

Compared to se developed countries, India has taken steady and early measures such as 21-day nationwide lockdown and has mand to restrict spread of virus with much lesser number of infected cases and casualties, despite being second-most populous country in world and more prone to spread of pandemic.

However, coming weeks are considered to be extremely critical for India in its fight against pandemic. As re is vaccine or specific antiviral medicine to treat COVID-19, social distancing and maintaining personal hygiene are need of hour.
