Coronavirus death toll spikes to 1765 in China; around 2000 new cases reported

On Monday, death toll from China's vel coronavirus epidemic surpassed 1,700, after 100 more people died in country's Hubei province, which is also centre of epidemic. As per Chinese government, new death toll w stands at 1765. At least 70,400 people have w been infected nationwide in China, with most cases being recorded in Hubei, where virus first emerged in December.

While authorities suggest number of new cases in province has been on a sharp decline, in its daily update, province's health commission also reported 1,933 new cases on Monday. China began reporting a drop in new cases of COVID-19, after witnessing a spike when counting method for cases changed to include people diagsed through lung imaging. latest cause of concern, however, has been death of people with travel history to China.

'Coronavirus could dam global ecomic growth'
On Sunday, IMF warned that coronavirus epidemic could dam global ecomic growth this year. International Monetary Fund's managing director Kristalina Georgieva while dressing Global Women's Forum in Dubai stated that while re may be a global decline, a sharp and rapid ecomic rebound could follow.

"re may be a cut that we are still hoping would be in 0.1-0.2 percent ," she said. She also said that full impact of spreing disease that has alrey killed more than 1,700 people would depend on how quickly it was contained.
Meanwhile, WHO has been frequently releasing situation report on COVID-19 and have found increasing evidence that established a link between vel coronavirus and or similar kwn coronaviruses. Referring to Rhilophus bat sub-species, WHO said that y are abundant and widely present in Sourn China, and across Asia, Middle East, Africa and Europe.
