Woody Allen, who has been a part of more than 70 films in various capacities throughout his career, is back with his next, Coup de Chance (Stroke of Luck). In this French thriller, the veteran filmmaker has continued his fascination with French New Wave-style filmmaking and neurotic relationships. Notably, Coup de Chance is Allen’s next directorial in three years after Rifkin's Festival.
3 things you need to know
- Woody Allen’s Rifkin’s Festival was an American-Spanish-Italian co-production.
- The filmmaker is known for delivering several classics such as Manhattan (1979), Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989), and more.
- The movie will premiere on September 27 at the Venice Film Festival.
Trailer hints at extramarital affair
The trailer of Coup de Chance opens with Fanny Moreau (Valerie Lemercier) lamenting that marriage “should be something you look forward to, not a chore”. Right in the next frame, she runs into Alain, an old friend from high school, and we see her slowly developing feelings for him.
At the same time, her husband Jean is shown to be quite a powerful and affluent man. The intersection of these characters spells royal trouble for Fanny and Alain, as showcased in the 1:30-minute-long clip. From the trailer, Coup de Chance looks pretty similar to Allen’s 2005 romantic thriller, Match Point, which the director also underlined in a previous interview.
He stated in the interview that Coup de Chance is a “poisonous romantic thriller in the veins of Match Point”. To note, the upcoming film is Allen’s 50th venture as the writer, director, and producer and his first French movie.
Synopsis and other details
As per the official synopsis, Coup de Chance will show the seemingly perfect life of Fanny and her husband Jean. It hits a turbulent path when “Fanny crosses, by chance, Alain, a former high school friend”, and is “immediately hooked”.
They meet up again “very quickly and get closer and closer”. While Coup de Chance will be in French, it is likely to have subtitles when it releases in other countries. It is, however, not yet clear as of now whether the film will have an American distribution.
