Damaged roads, lack of gear hinders Indonesia quake rescue

Heavy damage to roads and power blackouts hampered Indonesia's attempts to rescue survivors on Saturday, after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake left at least 45 dead and hundreds injured. Pictures from Mamuju on the west side of Sulawesi island showed a collapsed supermarket, downed power poles and roads blocked by debris and landslides.

Search and rescue operations were focused on about eight locations in Mamuju, which has been hardest hit by the quake and where people are still believed trapped following Friday's nighttime quake, said Saidar Rahmanjaya, who heads the local search and rescue agency. More than 200 people have received treatment in several hospitals in Mamuju, while another 630 have been hurt in Majene.At least 300 houses were damaged and about 15,000 people have been moved to shelters.
