Fishermen rescue Deer found floating in the ocean in Harrington Maine

Three Fishermen in Harrington Maine had a rather unusual sight on Monday at the sea. Shawn Dowling, Jared Thaxter, and Ren Dorr were laying traps in the ocean for fishes and lobsters when the met with something odd floating in the ocean. The trio moved closer only find that it was a 'deer' floating in the sea some 500 meters away from the shore.

'Couldn’t let the poor guy suffer'

“Found this little guy 5 miles offshore today drifting farther away from land. Couldn’t let the poor guy suffer and drown so we brought him aboard and sailed him a half-hour to land and dropped him off on the beach! And sailed back out to haul!” Ren Dorr said in a Facebook post. Speaking to local media, the fishermen said they found the deer floating with just its head visible. “He was just kind of going with the flow. He wasn’t trying to fight it or swim with it. He was just kind of floating along. There’s no way he made it that far on one tide,” Ren Dorr said. 

However, the trio's act received applauds on social media. "Poor thing must have been exhausted. Thank you for the rescue," said a comment on their facebook post.  "Not all heroes wear capes. Sometimes they wear lobster gear!" read another comment. The post has over 81,000 views and over 1,000 comments. The post was shared by 6,000 people.

Can Deers actually swim?

However, experts suggest Deers are actually good swimmers. Biologists have noted that deer often take to the water when frightened. Sometimes, they just keep on swimming in the direction that they were headed. At other times, deer will take to the water in an attempt to find food or shelter that is not easily accessible by other means. Ohio’s north coast, deer will sometimes be seen in Lake Erie, swimming to the small islands nearby. Some pregnant deer will also swim to small islands looking for a safer place to give birth to their fawns.
