New York: Former U.S. President Donald Trump appointed New York Representative Elise Stefanik as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, according to reports from the Associated Press.

“Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter,” Trump said in a statement Monday announcing his pick.

Nikki Haley, who challenged Trump for the GOP nomination, was among those who previously held the role in his first term.

The announcement confirmed that Stefanik, a Republican representative from New York, would take on the key diplomatic role, following Trump’s selection.

Stefanik, 40, who serves as House Republican Conference Chair, has long been one of Trump’s most loyal allies in the House, and was among those discussed as a potential vice presidential choice.

President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Rep. Elise Stefanik to serve as his ambassador to the United Nations.

Who is New York Representative Elise Stefanik

Stefanik, who has represented New York’s 21st Congressional District since 2015, gained national prominence for her role in the impeachment hearings of President Trump in 2019, where she became one of his staunch defenders.

Her rise in the political ranks has been rapid, and she has become a key player in the Republican Party, often aligning herself with the party's more conservative factions.
