Melania Trump Urges America to ‘Ascend Above Hate’ After Assassination Attempt on Husband
Melania Trump on Sunday urged Americans to "ascend above the hate" and work towards realising a world where "love transcends", hours after her husband and former US president Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt.
A 20-year-old gunman fired multiple shots at Trump, 78, at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, injuring his right ear.
Melania, 54, in her first public response since her husband was injured, reflected on what the incident means for her and her family while calling for the country to “ascend above the hate”.
"This morning, ascend above the hate, the vitriol, and the simple-minded ideas that ignite violence. We all want a world where respect is paramount, family is first, and love transcends. We can realise this world again. Each of us must demand to get it back. We must insist that respect fills the cornerstone of our relationships again," she said in a statement.
In the statement posted on Sunday morning on X, Melania thanked Secret Service agents and law enforcement officials for protecting her husband.
She said she was thinking of her "fellow Americans" as she watched that violent bullet strike her husband.
"I realised my life, and Barron’s life were on the brink of devastating change. I am grateful to the brave secret service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband." "America, the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered, but our courage and common sense must ascend and bring us back together as one," she said.
Offering her sympathy to the families of the innocent victims of the attack, Melania said: "Your need to summon your inner strength for such a terrible reason saddens me." The shooting left one spectator dead and two others critically injured. The male attacker was also shot and killed by a member of the Secret Service.

Former president Donald Trump on Sunday said the US must "stand united" and called for people to show "true character as Americans", remaining "strong and determined", after he survived an assassination attempt during a rally.
Trump, 78, survived the attempt on his life on Saturday when a 20-year-old shooter fired multiple shots at him at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, injuring his right ear. The shooting left one person attending the rally dead and two others in serious condition.
The suspected shooter was shot and killed by a member of the Secret Service.
Taking to his social media platform Truth Social platform, Trump said, “It was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening,” CNN reported.
“In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united, and show our true character as Americans, remaining strong and determined, and not allowing evil to win,” he said.
“We will FEAR NOT,” said Trump, the Republican Party's presumptive presidential nominee.
He said he would remain “resilient” and added, “Our love goes out to the other victims and their families,” according to the report.

What Were Trump's Words Right After Shooting?
A tape of Donald Trump’s microphone has been obtained, revealing the conversation between the presumptive Republican candidate and Secret Service agents moments after shots were fired during his campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
As per a video posted on X, Trump was seen in a conversation with the Secret Agents who rushes to him after he was shot. The security agents can be heard in a rush saying, "go, go, go," as they jumped to Trump's side and adding, "What are we doing," to communicate the next plan of actions.
One then immediately shouted, "Move! Shooter's down. Move!" Trump then said, "Let me get my shoes, let me get my shoes, let me get my shoes!" to which one of the agents reassured the former president, "We’ve got you, sir," he said while another one requested Trump, "Hold onto your head, it’s bloody."
However, the 76-year-old asked the agents, "Wait, wait” as he showed his raised fist to the crowd of supporters present at the rally, and appeared to repeatedly mouth the words "Fight. Fight." along with raising his fist towards the roaring crowd cheered "USA, USA," as the agents moved Trump from the stage.
