Washington: The US presidential election has been a suspenseful race, but after a tough call with the running mate Kamala Harris , former President and Republican nominee Donald Trump managed to secure a historic win.

Republican nominee Trump has secured 277 Electoral College votes, while Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, has 226, based on media projections.

With 270 votes required to clinch the presidency, Trump secured a historic mandate with a comeback to the White House after 4 years of Democratic rule.

In the US, winning states is more decisive than the popular vote because each state contributes a set number of electoral votes, reflecting its population.

In this election, US states are color-coded according to party alignment: red for Republicans and blue for Democrats. However, the pivotal 'purple' swing states, which often decide elections, lean neither way consistently.

Let’s examine the swing states that Trump and Harris are vying for and see where things currently stand.

Swing State Results

Swing states, identified as 'purple' because they shift between red and blue, play an outsized role in the election outcome. Projections indicate Trump is likely to secure all the seven major swing states:

  • North Carolina

As per the news agency AP, p Trump won this battleground state with its 16 electoral votes. Republican turnout meanwhile surpassed 2020 levels, while Democratic voter turnout has fallen, according to AP. Trump previously won North Carolina in 2020 and has seen improved performance in Republican areas this time.

  • Georgia

Trump also emerged victorious in Georgia. He narrowly lost this state in 2020 by just under 12,000 votes, but he has reclaimed it with incremental gains in deeply red, rural counties.

  • Pennsylvania

Trump will take Pennsylvania’s 19 electoral votes. This state, a crucial battleground, was flipped by President Joe Biden in 2020, but Trump had previously won it in 2016, becoming the first Republican to do so since 1988.

  • Arizona

Trump has also won Arizona, which accounts for 11 electoral votes.

  • Nevada

Nevada is leaning towards Trump,  positioning him for the state's six electoral votes.

Performance in Red States

Red states who are traditionally supportive of Republicans, are expected to fall in line for Trump. These states typically prioritize conservative values, favor limited government intervention, and are largely rural and suburban. States like Texas, Alabama, and Wyoming are classified as red and have shown continued support for Trump in this election and helped him secure victory.

  • Utah

Donald Trump won Utah and its six electoral votes in the 2024 US presidential election. Utah has not backed a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964.

  • Idaho

Marking his third consecutive victory in another US state, Trump won Idaho with 60 per cent of the total vote in this election. The state has always been a consistent supporter of Re[publicans.

  • Kansas

The Republicans won Kansas by securing its six electoral votes and marking the third consecutive victory for Trump, one again.

  • Iowa

Iowa's six electoral votes went straight to Donald Trump making him the thirst consecutive winner of the state.

  • Missouri

Trump also bagged Missouri's 10 electoral votes in the 2024 presidential election. The state has long been a reliable stronghold for Republicans.

  • Texas

The former president also won Texas by securing its 40 electoral votes. This did not come as a surprise as the state has leaned towards the Republican in recent presidential races.

  • Ohio

Trump also won Ohio, a crucial swing state in the 2024 presidential election. The Republicans bagged 16 electoral votes in the state.

  • Wyoming

Winning Wyoming in both 2016 and 2020 with a great margin, Trump won the state this time as well in the presidential race.

  • Louisiana

Donald Trump won Louisiana with eight electoral votes in the 2024 presidential election. He won the state.

  • South Dakota

Securing three electoral votes, Trump won South Dakota in the 2024 presidential election. South Dakota has always been one of the biggest supporters of the Republican nominee.

  • North Dakota

Similar to South Dakota, Trump won North Dakota as well by securing three electoral votes.

  • Arkansas

The former president won Arkansas by bagging six electoral votes in the state. This marks his third consecutive victory in this state.

  • Florida

In a not-so-surprising result, Trump won Florida by capturing 30 electoral votes in this presidential race. The state has never supported a Democrat since 1012.

  • Tennessee

Tennessee, a state that always has been a Republican supporter since the 1990s, gave Trump its 11 electoral votes in this presidential race.

  • Mississippi

Mississippi was won by the former president by sis electoral votes. The state has been a Republican supporter since 1976.

  • South Carolina

Giving the former president nine electoral voters, South Carolina made Trump win the state for the third consecutive term.

  • Oklahoma

The state has not supported a Democrat since 1964, and this time too the Republican won it by seven electoral votes.

  • Alabama

Winning nine electoral votes in the third state, Trump won Alabama in the 2024 presidential race.

  • West Virginia

Trump won West Virginia with four electoral votes in this presidential race.

  • Indiana

Maintaining his stronghold in the state, the former president won Indiana with 11 electoral votes in the 2024 presidential election.
