Australia's unique platypus is slowly being pushed towards extinction due to prolonged drought and or effects of climate change as claimed by a recent report. study shows that rived dwelling animals have alrey disappeared from 40 per cent of its original habitat due to drought, land clearing, pollution and building of dams.
Platypus may be declared 'vulnerable'
According to researchers, se of activities fragments ir habitat. Scientists predict that if environmental degration of ir habitat continues n platypus numbers are predicted to fall 47-66 per cent over next 50 years. duck-billed, egg-laying mammal is alrey classified as 'near threatened' by International Union for Conservation of Nature.

According to scientists from University of New South Wales' Centre for Ecosystem Science, dam done to animal's habitat and river systems has worsened chances of animal. Gil Bi, le author of study has said that environmental degration on platypus's natural habitat means that re are chances of repopulating an area once platypus goes extinct from that area.

study suggested that re is a real need for a risk assessment program at a national scale in order to determine if platypus should be classified as 'vulnerable' status. If that is case n re needs to be a set plan regarding conservation steps to be taken to ensure re is minimum risk of extinction to animal.
