Egypt, Ethiopia leaders discuss disputed Nile dam in Russia

Leaders of Egypt and Ethiopia met in Russia on the sidelines of Africa summit on Wednesday to discuss the disputed hydropower dam on the Nile river

Leers of Egypt and Ethiopia met in Russia on sidelines of Africa summit on Wednesday to discuss dispute over hydropower dam on Nile river which has been a cause of tension between countries. Reportedly, President of Egypt Abdel Fattah al-Sisi h "delivered a mess" to Prime Minister of Ethiopia Abiy Ahmed about dam, construction of which will soon be complete. According to reports, meeting that lasted nearly 45 minutes, took place in "a positive and healthy atmosphere". However, furr details of meeting is yet to be kwn.

re has been a long-running diplomatic standoff over building and operating Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has heightened stress between African countries. Egypt worries that construction of dam will worsen scarcity of water in area. President Sisi h earlier said that both leers were willing to discuss issue and hope to solve it anyhow. Both leers have also spoken on day when Ethiopian Prime Minister won a bel Peace Prize. According to Egyptian presidency spokesman Bassam Ry, main concern of talk will be to overcome any obstacle in negotiations over Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.

Ethiopia: source of Nile river

Even though Egypt is concerned about new dam hindering alrey scarce water situation in country, Ethiopia says that dam will t disrupt flow of river. Furrmore, Grand Renaissance Hydroelectric Project being developed on Blue Nile tributary in rrn Ethiopia will also be largest hydroelectric power station in Africa. In dendum to stress between Egypt and Ethiopia, Sudan has also hoped to buy electricity produced by dam.

Eygptian government h plans to overcome water poverty by 2037 by building huge seawater desalination plants and sew triple treatment plants worth 900 billion Egyptian pounds. Reportedly, Egypt has alrey spent 200 billion pounds on plan.
