Research has revealed that Elizabeth I translated Tacitus into English as per John-Mark Philo an honorary fellow in English studies at University of East Anglia

Recent research has revealed 16th Century Queen of England and Ireland, Elizabeth I, to be translator behind an English version of an ancient text by Tacitus. text described high politics, treachery, and debauchery of Roman elite and is considered one of highest literary works. finding is based on analysis of handwriting, her style of writing and of paper used. first book of Tacitus’s Annals was translated in 16th century and written in an elegant italic hand on ruled paper.

John-Mark Philo, an hourary fellow in English studies at University of East Anglia who wrote Review of English Studies mentioned in it that manuscript translation of Tacitus Annales w preserved at Lambeth Palace Library is work of Elizabeth I.

An ancient historian of Roman Empire, Tacticus portrayed Tiberius and Nero as tyrants in his work. He also related debauchery and corruption of empire’s rulers in his book. He was one of earliest Greek writers on art of war and is credited as first author to provide a complete guide to securing military communications.

Philo wrote that Elizabeth went to some lengths to retain density of Tacitus’s prose and his celebrated brevity. She stuck to specific variances of Latin syntax with remarkable commitment. Even if it meant it would me it a little more harder to understand in English.
