Emmanuel Macron meets Belarusian opposition leader, offers to mediate crisis

French President during his latest trip to Lithuania met with Belarus’ opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. Pushes for Europen Mediation.

French President during his latest trip to Lithuania met with Belarus’ opposition leer Sviatlana Tsikhauskaya. French President has also called European mediation in Belarus political crisis. Belarus is currently in grips of massive anti-government protests that are demanding resignation of country’s authoritarian leer Alexander Lukashenko.

Macron pushes for Europen mediation in Belarus crisis

August 9 presidential results claimed that Lukashenko h won by a landslide, but opposition leers and poll workers have claimed that election was rigged and fraudulent. Since n tens of thousands of protesters have taken streets every week and have demanded that Lukashenko step down. Lukashenko has ruled Belarus since 1994. Belarusian police have used violent tactics and mass arrests to suppress protests but this has only resulted in international condemnation with many in international community accusing Belarus of violating human rights.

According to reports, after meeting opposition leer Macron said: “We h a very good discussion. w we need to be pragmatic and to support Belarus people and we will do all that”. In dition, Macron has also praised cour shown by Tsikhauskaya who has continued campaign against Lukashenko from Lithuania and has sent messs of support to thousands of protesters in Belarus.

As per reports, Macron hopes that European Union will opt sanctions against Belarus officials this week. UK and Cana have alrey anunced sanctions against Belarusian President and or top officials including his son. large scale protests have also led to EU declaring that y do t recognize August 9 presidential election and as such do t recognize Lukashenko as country’s President.

Lukashenko has rejected repeated calls for him to step down. In past Lukashenk0o h claimed that mass protests were funded by United States in order to destabilize country.
