Family Lived In Dutch Farm Cellar For Years "Waiting For World To End"

Dutch authorities reported that local police have held an Austrian man after the discovery of a father and his adult children who were believed to have stayed hidden in a remote farmhouse for years, waiting for the end of the world.

The Ruinerwold village mystery

The mystery, which occurred in a small village of Ruinerwold in the northern province of Drenthe, got more intense as the authorities found out that one of the children had been active on social media for the past year.

According to authorities, the police have taken into custody a father and his five children aged between 18 and 25 and have also arrested another 58-year-old man, who failed to cooperate with the police. The police had earlier reported that the number of children caught were six, but later revised the number to five.

The Austrian foreign ministry confirmed that Austrian national from Vienna was being held in relation to the case, but the man refused to have any sort of contact with the Austrian officials. Ministry spokesman Peter Guschelbauer recently revealed that they are unaware of the exact grounds for the man’s arrest. Dutch authorities said all others in the cellar case were Dutch.

A family spends years waiting for the end of the world

Dutch and Austrian media claim the identity of the arrested man to be "Josef, the Austrian". According to media reports, the entire family spent years waiting for the end of the time. Ruinerwold's mayor recently informed that he has never seen anything like it in his entire life and found the case extremely mysterious.

The oldest of the five children in custody is a 25-year-old who has only gone by the name of "Jan", secretly kept a Facebook account and recently posted an update in June, after nine years of being on the social media site. According to the reports, the company is affiliated to another in the nearby town of Meppel and was raided by police on Monday, adding it belonged to the 58-year-old Austrian man. The report also stated that  "Jan" also posted pictures of himself "surrounded by trees" and in and near Ruinerwold, as well as links to products and rallies including the recent climate marches.
