Having premiered on NBC's network in 1994, Friends went on to become one of the generation-defining television shows of all-time. For ten seasons and 236 episodes, the iconic American show entertained audiences and made them laugh and cry. Millions of viewers around the world tuned in to their television sets to watch the misadventures of the gang of six: Joey, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Monica and Phoebe in New York City. One of the most entertaining characters on Friends was Janice Goralnik. Played by actress Maggie Wheeler in a memorable role, Janice was introduced in season one as Chandler Bing's infamous girlfriend. Her annoyance was defined by her infamous catchphrase, 'Oh. My. GAWD.' Other attributes of her personality were her signature nasal talking tone and loud laugh. While she was not considered to be part of the central cast, Janice was so popular on Friends and among the fans, that her popularity was rivalled only by Gunther, the lovestruck barista at the Central Perk cafe. In an interview with an international entertainment portal, Maggie Wheeler discussed certain things that went into making the character so iconic. She said that certain traits of Janice that made her so popular came from Maggie's own interpretation of the writing. She further added that Janice was an amalgamation of many women she encountered in New York City. The inspiration for the annoying laugh came from multiple pop culture references she was aware of. However, she credited Matthew Perry for having the ability to crack her up during rehearsals because of which her laugh came out the way it was in the show.
