Germany and France intend to continue their military cooperation and the development of a joint European combat aircraft and drones, the German defence minister said on Thursday.

Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer made her comments at a joint news conference with her French counterpart, Florence Parly, after a visit to an Airbus Space and Defence plant in Manching, near Ingolstadt in southern Germany.

The Eurodrone project was announced back in 2015 by four EU nations - France, Germany, Italy and Spain - in an effort to reduce their reliance on US-made drones.

Earlier in the day, both ministers met at the French airbase in Evreux, in the north-west French region of Normandy.
